Homestead Devotional

  • Peace in the Preparation and Faith

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
    — Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)

As the forecast warns of a major snowstorm, people rush to the stores—loading carts with milk, bread, and eggs. It’s a familiar scene, one repeated every winter. But on the homestead, we live with a different rhythm—one that anticipates the storm before it hits. Canned goods on the pantry shelf. Firewood stacked by the door. Generators checked. Animals given extra bedding. It’s not that we’re immune from the weather—it’s that we’ve chosen a life that values preparedness over panic.

Still, no matter how much I prepare, there's always a little voice that wonders: Will it be enough? Did I forget something?

That’s when the words of Isaiah 26:3 settle into my heart like a warm fire on a bitter night:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Perfect peace doesn't come from full freezers or stacked firewood. It comes from steadfast trust—a heart anchored not in circumstances, but in the unchanging faithfulness of God.

I can do all the right things to prepare for the storm, but only God can give peace within it.

On the homestead, we learn to live close to the rhythms of nature. And in that nearness, God reminds us that true security is not just in readiness—but in resting in Him.

    Reflection Questions:

    • What are you doing today to prepare not just your home, but your heart for the storm?
    • Where is your peace rooted—in your preparation or in your trust?
    • Are you staying “steadfast” in your thoughts, or letting worry have the final word?

    Prayer:

Lord, thank You for teaching me to prepare, but even more for reminding me to trust. Keep my mind anchored in You as storms approach, and let my peace come not from my plans, but from Your presence. Strengthen my heart to rest in Your faithfulness today. Amen.
