Hope in the Homestead Journey

Hope in the Homestead Journey

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
— Jeremiah 29:11

There’s something deeply hopeful about homesteading. We plant seeds expecting harvest. We raise animals anticipating provision. We build today for a tomorrow we haven’t seen yet. And yet, even with all our planning, things often don’t go as we expected—weather turns, crops fail, animals get sick, and circumstances change.

But Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that even when our plans unravel, God’s plans never fail.

He spoke these words to His people while they were living in exile—displaced, discouraged, and wondering if He had forgotten them. And His message was clear: “I still have a plan. It is good. And it is full of hope.”

Just like the rhythms of the homestead, where dormant seasons eventually give way to growth, God is at work—even when we don’t see immediate results. The setbacks, the slow progress, the unexpected detours? They don’t cancel His purpose. In fact, they often prepare us for it.

Trusting in God’s Timing

On the homestead, we learn to trust timing. We don’t rush the seasons, and we don’t dig up the seed to see if it’s growing. Likewise, God’s plans for our lives are sometimes hidden beneath the surface for a while, but they’re never absent. He knows what He’s doing, even when the path looks different than what we expected.

Jeremiah 29:11 invites us to believe that even now—whether we’re in a season of abundance or waiting, clarity or confusion—our future is secure in His hands.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are there areas of your homestead or life where things haven’t gone as planned?
  • What would it look like to trust God’s bigger plan in the middle of the unknown?
  • How can you remind yourself of His faithfulness as you plant, tend, and wait?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for having plans for me—even when mine fall apart. Help me trust that You are working behind the scenes, and that Your vision for my future is rooted in hope. As I build and tend this homestead, let my heart be anchored in Your promises. Amen.
