Just Chewin’ The Fat While Driving: Homestead Updates and More

In this podcast episode, I just wanted to chat with you about what has been going on around the homestead.

I talk about why I took a short break and some of the things I’ve been doing in the garden and with the livestock. I also talk about a few changes I’m thinking of making around the homestead. Mostly just chewin’ the fat with my friends as I take a drive to go get some homestead supplies.

When the Weather Cools, Days Shorten and the Garden Slows Down

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1

As the crisp air of fall settles in and the vibrant colors of summer fade, the garden begins its slow retreat into rest. Plants stop producing as quickly. Leaves turn. The tools find their way back into storage. It’s a time of winding down, of letting go, of preparing for stillness.

But in the quiet, God still speaks.

In Ecclesiastes, we’re reminded that there is a season for everything. Just as the soil rests in fall and winter to regain strength for spring, our lives need rhythms of slowing down too. The garden’s pause teaches us not only about nature’s design, but God’s — that rest is not waste, and endings are not failures. They are preparation.

The cooling weather and shorter days are an invitation to reflect on what was planted, what grew, what didn’t, and what might be done differently next year. Likewise, we are called to reflect, give thanks, and rest in God’s faithful provision.

This season of “less” is actually a gift — a time to draw near to the Lord, to restore our souls, and to trust that He is still working beneath the surface, even when growth is no longer visible.

Reflection Questions:

What is God teaching you in this slower season? How can you embrace rest as part of your spiritual growth? Are there things you need to let go of in order to prepare for what’s ahead?

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the seasons You’ve built into creation and into our lives. Help me not to resist the slowing down but to embrace it. Let this be a time of rest, renewal, and quiet trust in You. Teach me to see Your faithfulness even in the stillness. Amen.
