“The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing.”
— Proverbs 20:4 (ESV)
“But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”
— Luke 2:19 (ESV)
This time of year, as the ground rests under the chill of fall and early winter, our pantries and freezers take center stage. The jars we canned, the roots we stored, the meat we preserved—all serve us now when the growing has ceased. It’s a season not of harvesting, but of receiving—drawing from the abundance laid aside during busier days.
This rhythm mirrors our spiritual lives. There are seasons when we work hard—reading the Word, serving others, storing up truth. But then come quiet seasons—cold, slow, and seemingly dormant—where we must live on what we’ve tucked away in our hearts.
Like the wise farmer who prepares for winter, the believer is called to store up wisdom and truth before hard times come. Proverbs warns that if we neglect the work in our fruitful seasons, we’ll find ourselves empty when we need nourishment most. But if we’ve been faithful—if we’ve treasured God’s Word and His goodness—we’ll find spiritual provision in the pantry of our souls.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, gives us a beautiful example. After the angels, the shepherds, and the miracle of Christ’s birth, she didn’t speak or act in haste. Instead, she treasured and pondered. She preserved truth quietly within her, storing it for the seasons ahead.
Reflection Questions:
- Have you been spiritually preserving God’s Word in your heart for the quieter seasons?
- What “spiritual food” have you stored that you can lean on right now?
- How can you be more intentional in times of spiritual “harvest” so that you’ll be nourished in times of spiritual “winter”?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the seasons—both in the earth and in my heart. Help me to be diligent in planting and storing truth so that I may be nourished when life slows down. Teach me to treasure Your Word and rely on what You’ve already provided. In every season, remind me that You are enough. Amen.
