Faithful in the Cold

Winter Chores

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
Colossians 3:23 (ESV)

Winter mornings on the homestead hit differently. The cold bites. The ground is hard. Water troughs freeze. Tools feel heavier. Everything in you says, Stay inside. Wait until it’s easier. But you know better. The animals still need feeding. The firewood still needs stacking. The work still matters.

This is the hidden lesson of winter homesteading—faithfulness even when it’s uncomfortable.

In Colossians 3:23, Paul reminds us that all our work, even the quiet, gritty kind done when no one is watching, should be done “as for the Lord.” That means every frozen water bucket, every frosty breath hauling hay, every slippery step across the yard—when done with a right heart—is a form of worship.

Winter chores shape more than the homestead. They shape our character. They remind us that obedience isn’t always glamorous or easy, but it is good. Choosing to show up and do what needs to be done—even when no one else sees—mirrors the faithfulness of our Savior, who came to serve rather than be served, and who did not shrink back from hard things.

Winter won’t last forever. But the habits of perseverance and diligence we build during it will.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are there areas in your life where you’re tempted to “stay inside” spiritually instead of pushing through the hard work?
  • How might your daily, unseen efforts be bringing glory to God?
  • What small acts of obedience can you commit to, even when they feel cold and inconvenient?

Prayer:
Lord, help me to be faithful in every season—especially the hard ones. Teach me to do my work with joy, even when it’s uncomfortable. Let me see each task as an offering of worship to You, and give me strength to press on when I’d rather quit. Amen.
