Provision in the Wilderness

Bow Hunting

“The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.”
Psalm 145:15–16 (ESV)

This time of year, many homesteaders take to the woods—rifle or bow in hand, walking carefully through creation in search of deer, squirrel, turkey, or rabbit. It’s not about sport. It’s about provision—putting meat in the freezer, stewarding the land wisely, and honoring the resources God gives.

The hunt is rarely easy. It takes patience, discipline, stillness, and respect for the animal and the environment. It often ends in long hours with nothing to show—except perhaps the quiet strengthening of character and the humbling awareness that all provision ultimately comes from the Lord.

Psalm 145 reminds us that every living thing looks to God for sustenance—and He opens His hand in due season. That means He provides not always when we want, but when it’s time. Whether we’re harvesting from a field or bringing home game from the woods, it’s not our effort alone that fills the pantry or the freezer. It’s His grace.

And when the animal is harvested and the meat is wrapped and frozen, there is a quiet, holy moment of thanks. Not just for food—but for a Creator who provides, sustains, and teaches us through every season of work.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where have you seen God’s hand of provision this season—whether through a harvest or an unexpected blessing?
  • How can you cultivate more patience and stillness in your spiritual walk, like you would during a hunt?
  • Are there ways you can honor God more intentionally with the food and resources He provides?

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for providing for my needs in so many ways—through the land, the animals, the work of my hands, and the blessings I don’t always see coming. Help me to be patient, diligent, and grateful in every season. May I never forget that You are the true Source of every good thing. Amen.
