Podcasts are one of my favorite ways to pass the time while I’m doing chores around the homestead or driving. Here are my top 14 homesteading podcasts that offer great tips, stories, and inspiration:
- The Urban Farm and Garden Show – Craig and Larry, based in Colorado Springs, offer tons of practical advice on growing food and living sustainably.
- Permaculture Voices – Hosted by Diego Footer, this podcast covers permaculture, urban farming, and sustainable living. I particularly love the episodes with Curtis Stone and Darby Simpson.
- Chicken Thistle Farm CoopCast – Andy and Kelli, a married couple from New York, share their experiences raising pigs, running a CSA, and managing their farm.
- The Survival Podcast – Hosted by Jack Spirko, this five-day-a-week podcast covers everything from prepping to permaculture. With over 1,800 episodes, there’s something for everyone!
- The Self-Sufficient Homestead – Johnny Max and “the Queen” discuss their homesteading adventures. It’s a bit of an old podcast, but the back episodes are full of useful information.

- One Yard Revolution – This channel focuses on growing a lot of food on a small suburban lot. It’s packed with practical tips for small-space gardening.
- Albo Pepper – Another great channel for urban gardeners, Albo Pepper shares how to grow food in small spaces and offers advice on sustainable gardening practices.
- An American Homestead – This off-grid family in the Ozarks shares everything from raising livestock to canning and aquaponics.
- The Rusted Gardener – Gary, the host, shares tons of gardening tips, from starting seeds to dealing with pests. While he sometimes uses non-organic methods, the advice is solid.
- MI Gardener – Based in Michigan, this channel covers gardening, self-sufficiency, and cooking. It’s great for anyone wanting to grow their own food.
- DaddyKirbs Farm – Blake Kirby shares videos on permaculture, self-sufficiency, and homesteading. His recent episodes on beekeeping are particularly fun.

- Homestead Front Porch – A large and active group where homesteaders from all over share tips, ask questions, and offer support. I guess I’m partial to this one because it’s my group.
- Homesteads and Sustainability – This group focuses on sustainable homesteading practices, with lots of helpful advice and friendly members.
- Blogging About Homesteading, Gardening, and Homemaking – A smaller, more intimate group where bloggers and homesteaders share their experiences and advice.
Documentaries to Get You Fired Up
When you need a little inspiration, these documentaries are great for learning more about food systems, farming, and sustainability:
- The Organic Life – This documentary follows a year in the life of an organic farmer and his filmmaker wife. It’s an inspiring look at the realities of farming.
- American Meat – This documentary highlights the problems in the meat industry and offers solutions for a better, more sustainable food system.
- Food, Inc. – A well-known documentary that takes a hard look at the corporate-controlled food industry in America. It’s eye-opening, though it focuses more on the problems than the solutions.
- Fresh – A more hopeful documentary that focuses on the solutions to the problems in our food system. Definitely worth a watch!
- Farmageddon – This documentary tells the stories of farmers who were shut down by government regulations while trying to provide healthy, sustainable food.
